Ownersip: Take 100% responsibility for your life now so that you can change anything no longer serving you at this time.
Taking Ownership of our lives is one of the most empowering decisions we will ever make. Without this decision we are potentially stuck in victim mentality or victim mode for certain aspects of our lives. Not taking ownership results in blaming others for what has happened and takes the power of change from you. Taking ownership gives you back the control that is required if you wish to change your life.
Things happen to people that are undesirable: illnesses, deaths, accidents, divorces, loss of a job, financial issues, etc. At the core of these bad events, there are choices that are made that led to the end result. It is easy to focus on the “injustice”, “mistreatment” and the actions of others and how it impacted us. Often a choice is made to blame others for what is going on that we don’t like. When we do this, we relinquish our power. We become victims and are at the mercy of other people. Is that what you want?
Let’s look at a scenario to help you understand this better. Let’s say you are having relationship issues. It is easy to blame your significant other for the miscommunication. Even if you feel they are being unreasonable, it is important to take ownership of what you say and do. You can focus your energies on learning how to communicate more effectively with your significant other. You can “own” your part in the relationship. What they choose to do, is for them to decide. What you can do, is take ownership of what you say, how you react and feel, and what you do. You are in control of you.
Here is another scenario. Let’s say that you have been diagnosed with a serious illness or disease. You can be mad at the world and blame your parents, God, or ??? for your misfortune. But how does that serve you? Getting angry and blaming others does not help you. Being frustrated with your health change just creates disempowerment. When you “own” and accept what is going on in your body, you can take steps to feel better. There is never a guarantee that you will be cured, but your journey will be more pleasant when you take ownership of where you are at. With ownership, you can focus on lifestyle changes that help you to be healthier vs. succumbing to the “why me” mentality.
Think of the things in your life that have happened in your past that you still think about today. The things that upset you. Now, think about how these were speedbumps in your life. Things that helped you to become the person that you are now. Even the most horrible life events can create some beautiful outcomes by the skills or lessons that you learned. For example, near death experiences often change people – how it changes them is up to them. Taking ownership of the choices that led up to that event and changing the choices from that point going forward.
It is not the events in our life that affect us, it is the meaning that we attach to those events. We can not change the past, but we can change how we think about it.
Once you have an event in your mind, the event that is still causing you pain, think about the ways that you can take ownership of it. Not in a blaming fashion, but in a freeing manner. This is to free you from being under the control of the event and of other people. Reframe what you say about this event. Think of ways that you can “own” that event and take control of it. Be accepting and forgiving of yourself and others when you think of this event.
If you have encountered significant trauma, you may need the guidance of a skilled professional. As a personal coach, I ask open-ended questions to help you discover the solutions within yourself. There are a specific set of coaching principles that I use to guide a person to having breakthrough successes. Seeing a coach on a weekly basis for 90 to 180 days and working through a proven system will have a dramatic effect on how you are living your life.
I encourage you to decide now to take ownership of your life and all your choices. It may seem a little harsh but it is actually very freeing to take ownership. When you are in control of your thoughts, your actions, and your results, no one else can hurt you.
